College basketball is better than pro basketball? That is what a lot of people tell me. You know what I call those people? Morons.
I enjoy March Madness because of the drama provided by the format and if you are a college student it is certainly a blast to follow your team and root ferociously against your rivals (I was a Terp when they won the title). But to compare the quality of basketball to that of the NBA is ludicrous.
The argument I most often hear is that college players play harder. Why, because they slap the floor? That whole line of thinking sounds like code for *I don’t like black people* to me.
The real difference between college ball and the NBA is the players. College players suck. I was trying to watch a Duke vs. B.C. game the other day and found it a chore to get through because there was so much garbage out on the floor. And Duke is maybe the most prestigious program in the country! Honestly, would you bet more than $10 that Greg Paulus could beat me one-on-one or would you be scared to lose your money (he is definitely a better quarterback than I am)?
At this point most of the elite talent bolts after one year so if you are asking me whether I would rather see precise execution on a back-door cut or Kobe, LeBron, Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul, I am going to choose the latter. Emphatically.
