Why do I love sports (I can feel the corniness oozing out of me)? I was actually wondering this today while bored (see my lundblog on boredom for more).
My answer is not that complex and probably doesn’t deserve its own blog but oh well. I think there are two reasons I find myself enamored with certain sports (I am not one of these dudes who watches everything or considers things like golf a sport). For one, the drama is not forced. As much as you may trust your ability to prognosticate no one truly knows the outcome of a given game. That is why you spend so much time biting your nails, pumping your fist, hopping around like a mad man or sobbing uncontrollably.
The second reason is that I love to watch someone truly special do something that shouldn’t be possible. There are certain guys who are just captivating. I guess people identify with different types of athletes as some people appreciate the craft more, others may like the zest with which someone plays and some just like to root for their favorite team. Me, I like to watch the guys I marvel at and who make me say “Wow” or “Yippee”…LeBron James (I think he was born in a petri-dish), Brandon Jacobs (that punishing style), Nate Robinson (that l dynamic little bastard), Michael Vick when he was active, Barry Sanders or Michael Jordan in their primes, etc. Basically the guys who make me rewind a play and futilely attempt to get my girlfriend to watch.
In conclusion I don’t know if I learned anything or provided any insight but at least I wasn’t bored for the last 10 minutes. Corny period over.
