wolverineWolverine is the greatest. He is the best there is at what he does and what he does is be the best character of all time. I am a self-professed comic book guy and as a wee lad I was immediately intrigued by Logan.

The first comic book I bought featured Hulk (my 2nd favorite character) vs. Thor. I was about 7-years-old and saw it in the grocery store. The cover intrigued me (Hulk and Thor is one of the most epic and even battles of all) and I begged my Dad to buy it for me. He relented under the condition that I wouldn’t ask for any more. Of course that didn’t last long. One day I was in the car with my Mom and saw a Wolverine cardboard stand-up outside a comic store. I must have exclaimed “who is that cool looking dude with the claws?” and my mother promptly took me to the store. That is when it all truly began.

When I started buying comics regularly I would choose them based on the cover. X-Men and Wolverine were usually my top choices. Shortly thereafter my Mom suggested I actually read the comics and follow them in their intended order. I did just that and X-Men and Wolverine remained my top choices.

Wolverine was immediately interesting because of his complexity (and his claws). He is a tortured soul, always blurring the hero line. On one hand he is loyal to his teammates and would die for them without hesitation (though he is nearly impossible to kill). On the other hand he never hesitates to merk someone and not as a last resort. His accumulated body count is ridiculous (awesome claws and bezerker rage really help here). His past, part mystery and part tragedy helped to further flesh out his character. I felt like I knew him better than he knew himself. He is the prime example of the edginess of Marvel vs. the corniness of D.C., which I will get into in a later blog.

Needless to say I am stoked for the theatrical release of the Wolverine movie. I used to cast X-Men movies in my mind all the time as a kid and somehow the movie series basically met my expectations (X-2 is the best comic movie ever).

I just hope they do the character justice. And that he savagely disembowels some people in the process.
