E-Mail Bullies

email_bulliesI hate e-mail bullies. You know who I am talking about. The guy who feels the need to chide you via e-mail and cc a bunch of people as if to say, “Look at me, I am strong!”

Do you feel the need to flex your muscle that much? Are you that insecure? Is functioning in real life that difficult for you? Generally if I want to communicate with someone I simply call or e-mail them directly. I don’t call their mom to tell on them.

Ccing people is fine if you are passing on information or if the subject matter is something that concerns many people. But doing it as a method to show your control over a situation or as a means to correct or chastise someone is so transparently selfish it is ridiculous. All it is, is a blatant attempt to show that you are doing something, which probably means you aren’t.

I find the best way to deal with an e-mail bully is the same way one would deal with a school-yard bully. Give it right back to them. Reply all, acknowledge the issue at hand, politely state your opinion and in the process eviscerate their message. 99 times out of 100 that will be the end of the e-mail chain.

I usually laugh when I see a bully-ish e-mail (and no I didn’t receive one to prompt this blog). It is funny, irritating and sad all at the same time that someone would so desperately feel the need to prove their own self worth by trying to make someone else look worthless.
