Witness Protection

witness_protectionShaquille O’Neal is a Cleveland Cavalier. Forget basketball for a second. The NBA, like all sports, is a TV show. Can anyone argue that the NBA didn’t just get way better as a TV show? Nike is stitching a Shaq puppet as I write this.

Now on to basketball. I’ll start with the questions. Will Shaq be able to defend the pick and roll? Will he clog the lane too much for LeBron? Those should be the two on-court concerns. With that said, I don’t see how anyone can argue with the move. While I don’t think it impacts the New York pursuit of LeBron (this is clearly a win-now move, not a building for the future one), it is the final year of Shaq’s contract and will give Cleveland financial flexibility next summer.

As for this coming season, the Cavs have the potential to be physically overwhelming. LeBron and Shaq? That is like Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant forming a tag team. Say what you will about Shaq but he is still a commanding presence. He can still score efficiently in the paint, command a double team and most importantly, guard Dwight Howard one-one-one. As long as the Cavs add a swingman I can’t see how they won’t be a vastly improved team next season. Throw in the fact that Shaq will likely be motivated to one up Kobe and get one last contract and you have a potentially dominant squad.

I will end this blog with a sentence that is a lot of fun to write. Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James are on the same team. One more time. Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James are on the same team. CANNNNN YOUUUUU DIGGGG ITTTTT?
