Whenever somebody dies they tend to be heaped with praise that exceeds their accomplishments. In Steve McNair’s case, the on-the-field praise is more than justified. I won’t pretend to know anything about his personal life but I do know this (to borrow a phrase from nearly every NFL talking head)…the guy was a football player.
Steve McNair was John McClaine or Jack Bauer, determined and tough as nails. There were times where it looked like he could barely breathe or move on the sidelines but nevertheless he was diving for a first down on the next series. Everybody remembers the drive in the Super Bowl that came up just short yet McNair spent his whole career as a winner. He won 60% of his starts and frequently led his team deep into the playoffs. I think it is a very legitimate question to ask who you would have rather had quarterbacking your team into the post season: McNair or Peyton Manning?
If I was handing out Madden-style ratings McNair would certainly score high in all the physical categories (let’s not underrate his size and athleticism before he was basically playing crippled) but he would definitely get a 100 for heart. You are lying if you watched him play and didn’t come away thinking he was a warrior.
I’m only half joking when I say that I’m surprised those bullets stopped him.
