Bruno is the gayest movie ever made. And I don’t mean gay in a Brokeback Moutain man and man love story kind of way. I mean it in a twirling penis kind of way.
The theater I saw it in was filled with two kinds of people; those who erupted in riotous laughter and those who were clearly uncomfortable (several groups walked out). Somehow I think Sacha Baron Cohen is just as satisfied with the uneasiness he inspired as he is with the laughs. Because if there is one thing he proves in Bruno, it is that he is absolutely fearless and will do anything to get the reaction he is looking for. There are at least three scenes in the movie where he literally could have been killed.
The highpoints of the movie are undeniable. There are moments where you will find yourself laughing until your soul hurts, even if you aren’t quite sure why. And for that, Bruno does not get the train to Auschwitz.
