NFL–Week Eight Thoughts

Eagles Giants Football
This week proves that I, along with everyone else, know nothing. For everything I got absolutely right, I got something else horribly wrong. Typical NFL…

–Wow at the Giants. Forget concern, it might be time for full-fledged panic. Their secondary couldn’t cover Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui at this point and the lack of pressure on the quarterback is alarming. Tack on a suddenly erratic (extremely) Eli Manning and you have the recipe for a three game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Eagles are once again the team to beat in the NFC East. Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb have a lot of weapons at their disposal (DeSean Jackson is going to cross over into a new dimension if he doesn’t slow down) and an explosive, quick-strike offense is the result. They even ran the ball a little in this one.

–Dallas looks good too but I’ll take Reid and McNabb over Tony Romo and Wade Phillips every time.

–Is it weird that I wish I had seen a little of the Rams-Lions game? *Pats self on back for Steven Jackson prediction*

–It is certainly not weird that I’m glad I didn’t see a second of the Browns-Bears game.

–I think Ted Ginn Jr. effectively ended the Jets’ playoff hopes while keeping the Dolphins’ on life support. The Mark Sanchez and Rex Ryan era has gone from promising to plummeting in the time it takes to say “Sanchize” (not the most well-worded sentence but I have been wanting to make fun of that nickname for a while). If only they could run quarterback draws from the one on every play. With that snide remark said, the Jets still have a ton of elite personnel, making losses like this one even more frustrating.

–Are the Houston Texans a playoff team? Maybe. That is a cop out but it is the only appropriate answer. I can’t decide how good they are.

–Indianapolis got the job done against the 49ers to remain undefeated. I’m still not convinced that the Colts are the best team in the league (or the conference). But remember, I know nothing.

–The bye week did not treat the Broncos well as their defense finally took one on the chin. On the other side, it is very odd watching a good Ravens’ offense. Ray Rice is an absolute stud and is the best dual-threat back to hit the league in quite a while.

–Carolina creaming Arizona proves the “any given Sunday” cliche. It also proves that I know nothing.

–Vince Young came through! Thanks for proving I know something! I’m rooting for him (he is now 19-11 as a starter). Also, what I said about DeSean Jackson certainly applies to Chris Johnson. In fact, I think he already popped out of a wormhole on one of those runs. Perhaps the Jaguars should have handed the ball to Maurice Jones-Drew more? He did have 177 yards on eight carries.

–LaDainian Tomlinson is absolutely cooked. He lost all his burst and is only managing to get 3.5 yards a carry. The Chargers need to find his replacement asap. Their lack of a running game is going to bite them when they aren’t playing the Raiders.

–Gunslung Count: Favre 7, Lundberg 1…I give up. The Vikings are for real. I like them just as much as anybody in the NFC right now, including the Saints. I still believe Favre will fail when it counts. I only half believe it though. I never thought I’d enjoy getting gunslung so much. I’m starting to root against myself.

I tried to stay positive about the giants. I no longer can. I think with the Chargers comming into town and beat writers calling for Coughlin job, It’s now time to panic.

    /Hits Panic button

I do agree with you about Favre. Although this may come as a suprise, not only am I not sold on the Vikings and Favre, I amm not sold on the saints(and thats not my inner Giants fandom speaking). If they pull another tank job like they did in the first half of the Dolphins game, i dont see them coming back or should i say i dont see the opposing team giving the game away. and Thomas, dont give up on the giants, im pretty sure we tanked a few games in 07, so now is not the time to give up. One thing Giants fans should look on the bright side about is that yes Brandon Jacobs is not getting many carries, but i feel like it will benefit the Giants having a fresh running back in the long haul to try and make a push for the division at the end. I would rather see my team go into a slump and come out of it than have a team like the Chargers who can teach a class on mediocre football week in and week out. just my $0.75

Yeah, this week was crazy, but u know there are a few weeks like this every year. I think the Colts escaping that game showed a lot, every team will slip and play below themselves, for them to do that and still win shows a lot. The Aints will eventually burn out, their defense isnt as good as the credit they get (They have been giving up a lot of points and i think if they played Philly with a healthy McNabb it would have been a different game). Carolina might actually be turning things around, no one thought they were as bad as they have been playing, guess what, maybe they really weren’t that bad. Just found your site and its very entertaining, keep it up!

^^^Thanks. I agree on the Saints. D isn’t that nice and I can’t fully believe in offensive teams.
