The Fantastic Four have dealt with many obstacles: Galactus (who just happens to eat planets), Dr. Doom, every single cataclysmic event in Marvel history and a couple of fairly crappy movies. But it is the X-Men who have generally had to battle the “Master of Magnetism”. This got me wondering what would transpire if Marvel’s first family were to square off with the Malcolm X to Professor Xavier’s Martin Luther King.
First, let me set the parameters. This is not a planned showdown. It is a random encounter. Say Magneto attacks a ship coming into New York and the X-Men are in the Savage Land and the Avengers are in space or something. The likes of Spiderman and Daredevil couldn’t handle him, so it would be up to the FF. I see it going like this…

The Thing is going to waste no time heading right into the fray. Normally this is a good thing considering he is a tough as nails guy who just happens to be able to life 80 tons and is made of rock. In this case, not so much. Magneto will simply avoid his assault and go to work hurling every piece of metal he can find at him. Mr. Grimm can withstand most assaults but eventually Magneto will bring down too much fury and render him a non factor.
The Human Torch and Invisible Woman are no slouches in the power department and they will do their best but I can’t see them getting the job done either. Magneto will deflect Torch’s flames with his electromagnetic shield (he will do the same to Sue’s force bubbles) and nail or impale him (depending on his mood) with surrounding debris. And while the Invisible Woman may not be able to be seen with the naked eye, he will use an electro magnetic pulse to find her and eventually her force field will fall under the pressure.
This leaves the weakest member physically but perhaps the most dangerous overall, Reed Richards, as Magneto’s final obstacle. If Reed had any time to plan, he would certainly come up with a device to combat Magneto. I don’t think he could do it quickly enough in this instance. And no amount of stretching would be enough to avoid defeat.
In a second encounter, things would end up much differently. For now, Magneto scores the win.
