Bracketology

I, like most people, enjoy March Madness. It is both dramatic and interactive. But the quality of play is not what makes the tournament. The talent pool in college basketball is watered down and there just aren’t that many great teams and players. If you are one of those people who thinks college is better than the pros, you are delusional. So what makes the NCAA Tournament special? It’s simple…brackets.

Brackets allow you to participate, to prognosticate and to fawn over potential matchups. With the tourney you get to predict your Final Four, pick upsets and watch teams fight to stay alive in a one and done format.

Brackets work for other things as well. Nearly anything in fact. Try it. Bracket up your favorite family members (parents, spouses, kids and siblings are the high seeds), super heros (Hulk, Superman, Thor and Silver Surfer are the likely 1’s), hot females (Beyonce ftw), movies, rappers, rock groups, comedians, foods, diseases (no other illness is beating cancer) or anything else and see if you don’t have fun filling it out. You will. I’m having fun just writing about it.

I’ll figure out something original (hopefully) to bracket and occupy myself with over the coming weeks; tonight, the tourney will suffice.

For the record, I’m going with Kentucky. They have the most talent. (College basketball is solely about recruiting and that is why John Calipari is great. I half expect him to try and bribe the good players from the opposing teams to switch sides at halftime.) Yes, their best players are freshmen. But you’d rather have a team full of talented freshmen than average seniors. The Wildcats have at least three first round picks on their roster (two top five guys). That’s enough for me in a field full of average.
