If you know me, you know how much I hate going to movies selected by girls. Therefore, as an anticipatory maneuver, I suggested “Date Night”, knowing that it would be met positively and knowing that it would not cause me to have suicidal thoughts while sitting through it.
This was an excellent decision. To create a cheesy review blurb…’Date Night is a real winner. Steve Carrell and Tina Fey have never been funnier.’ I’ve always kind of liked Carrell and Fey. I’ve never loved them. I thoroughly enjoyed both of them in this. They balance each other out perfectly. I wish they would date in real life.
The plot of “Date Night” is simple. A normal and loving couple/parents decide to enjoy a night out in Manhattan. After posing as another couple to steal a reservation at a trendy restaurant, they are mistakenly dragged into the criminal underbelly of the city and ridiculousness ensues. Ridiculousness includes: car chases, seedy strip joints and several high powered cameos (all of which work).
The breakout star of the film is Fey. I’ve always credited her talent but have never been bowled over by her work. Maybe that is because she didn’t have the pull to have a leading role before. She shines here. Her improv skills and charisma are on full display and she manages to pull off both funny and sexy. In spades.
Fellas, I advise you to follow my blueprint. It’s a win-win and a good “Date Night” at that.

I agree, it was a funny movie, funny enough to watch now AND solve the problem of taking the mistress to a “chick flick” movie.
