He’s gone from shutdown corner to holdout corner and is continuing the Summer of empowerment for players. LeBron James took his talents to South Beach to construct a super team. Darrelle Revis has not taken his talents to training camp in order to construct a new contract and his team has no chance to be super without him.
I’ve stated before that I believe the Jets should basically pay Revis whatever he is asking for. The guy is a rare commodity. In a league where the passing game and wide receivers are at more of a premium than ever, Revis managed to singlehandedly cut the field in half for his teammates. It’s much easier to be the best defense in the league when you have a defensive back capable of holding Andre Johnson to 4 catches for 35 yards, Randy Moss to 4 catches for 24 yards, Marques Colston to 2 catches for 33 yards, Terrell Owens to 3 catches for 13 yards, Roddy White to 4 catches for 33 yards, Reggie Wayne to 6 catches for 89 yards (in two games) and Ochocinco to 2 catches for 28 yards (also in two games). And this same dude is scheduled to make $1 million this year? LOL (I have never typed that before).
Do I feel great about supporting this kind of thing? Of course not. I was a part of teams, I’d like to see guys show up to work every day, give 100% and all that. But the reality is the situation as it currently exists…a savage hypocrisy. Teams and owners are not obligated to honor contracts, so if players outperform theirs, they should do whatever they can to get paid (as much as possible). After all, they are playing a sport that should probably be illegal.
I also enjoy seeing employees defeat management. Who wouldn’t want to have power of their boss? Just because you don’t have it, doesn’t mean you should get mad at people who do.
The only leverage a player has is his ability. If you don’t want to give him what he wants, then the way to force your hand is take his talents away. Darrelle Revis, like he does everything else, has that mindset covered.
