Machete Review

Between “Machete” and “Piranha”, I’ve now seen back-to-back movies that make no false pretense about what they are (what this says about me is a different story). What “Machete” is, is exactly what it promised to be when it was only a trailer before Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s “Grindhouse” double feature. And that is a cheesy, gory extravaganza.

Over the top violence? Check. Tongue in cheek dialogue, including the pronunciation of the word machete? Check. Absurd performances from recognizable actors? Check. Scantily clad women? Check (Michelle Rodriguez steals the show from Jessica Alba in this regard). “Machete” has all of the above and all the above provide smiles and laughs.

My biggest complaint is that for a fairly short film, it feels about ten minutes too long. At some point, even when it is exagerated to excellent effect, the ridiculousness cannot continue to be original. However, this is a minor complaint trapped in a mountain of ludicrous death.

Robert Rodriguez does this sort of thing well. He proves it again here. So, in the spirit of the film, I’ll make a corny joke. “Machete” is a cut above the rest.

I’m still laughing about the climax…with the cars hopping up and down…too bad LL didn’t end up on the business end of a machete…but the nakedness was appreciated.

  2. Machete making out with Lindsay Lohan was the highlight for me.
